Charles E. McDermet, 84, of Avon, Illinois, passed away at 8:25 a.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2024 in his home. He was born October 26, 1939 on the family farm in Avon, Illinois, the son of Guy J. and Lelia Mabel (Ault) McDermet. He was raised and educated in Roseville, graduating from Roseville High School in 1957. He then entered the United States Navy and served from 1957-1961.

He married Pamela Sue Doubler Davis on May 20, 1977 in the Abingdon Christian Church and she preceded him in death on July 31, 2020.

Those left to cherish his memory are one brother, John (Vivian) McDermet of Gilson, Illinois; one sister, Judy (Gordon) French of Galesburg, Illinois; 3 step-children, Julee (Terry) Wagner, Burlington, Iowa, Randy Davis of Monmouth, Illinois, Tami (Jerry) Davis Chubb of Burlington; 7 step-grandchildren, Jacob (Carly Kurtz) Broderick, Cory (Jersi Warner) Clark, Nathan Davis, Honesty Davis, Britta Swanson, Shanna Fisher and Salinda (Doug) Shinn; 12 step great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Chad (Sherry) Doubler; sisters-in-law, Jan (Hayden) Younggren and Kim (Larry) Brewerton. Several nieces and nephews also survive including, Lora McCallister, Linda (Brian) Glisan and Leslie (Bob) Quirk; several great-nieces & nephews including Madyson (David Ward) Glisan, Zachary (Jacie) Glisan, Melinda (Justin Ellis) McCallister, Hannah Quirk and Megan Quirk and a special great-great niece and nephew, Rhett Glisan and Reese Ward.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; 3 brothers, Gerald, Bill and Frankie, 4 sisters, Melba, Wilma, Pat and Shirley and 2 stillborn.

Charles worked for Maytag Manufacturing in Galesburg for over 30 years until his retirement in 1995. He was a lifelong farmer and lived on the family farm all his life. He enjoyed farming, fishing, gambling, scratch off tickets and playing the slot machines at the Victory Tap. He was a long-time member of the Masons. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed visiting with the special ladies at Tompkins State Bank in Abingdon and bringing them treats.

Charles’ family is very grateful to Lora McCallister and Linda Glisan for the love and care they provided for him.

Graveside services with military honors will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Avon Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and left in the care of the funeral home. Moore Memorial Home, Avon, is handling the arrangements.
