Dorris Coleman

Share

Dorris Coleman was born June 14, 1933, in Georgianna, Alabama, to the late RC and Zora Lee (Herbert) Coleman. He was called home to be with the Lord on August 8, 2024.

Dorris left Georgianna for greener pastures and landed in Galesburg, Illinois and later moved to Kansas. He was an entrepreneur early in life as the proprietor of two businesses, Coleman’s Carwash and the A&C Lounge. Dorris later became a track inspector for BNSF Railroad, until his retirement in 1998.

Dorris professed a belief in Christ at an early age and continued his relationship with the Lord throughout his life. Dorris was always ready to share the love of the Lord and let His light shine through him by way of his endearing smile, his affectionate, strong, look you in the eye handshakes, and his hugs. He was a beloved member of Second Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee. He later joined Holmeswood Baptist Church, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dorris served during the Korean War, in the United States Army, and was honorably discharged. He was also a member of WL Darrow Masonic Lodge, #10. Dad was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to so very many. His quick wit and sense of humor made him a one-of-a-kind jokester and the very best storyteller. Dad touched and expressed his love for his family with his cooking, his wisdom, and the many trips back and forth to Galesburg delivering smiles and goodies. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Taylor. He later remarried the late Jo Etta Bivens. He was also preceded in death, by a daughter, Marietta Tinsley, a granddaughter, TaWanda Davis, four brothers, Wilbur, Henry, Jimmy, and Morris, and three sisters, Nora Mae, Ola Mae and Louise.

Dorris (Daddy) Coleman leaves to carry on his legacy and cherish his loving memory, a brother, Horace Coleman of Galesburg, and a sister, Francis Bailey of Florida, his children, Robert (Penny) “Robert Bernard” Coleman of Denver, Colorado, Michael (Patricia) “Michael Lee” Coleman of Galesburg, his loving daughter and caregiver, Diane “Dicey” Davis of Lenexa, Kansas, and his beloved babygirl, Colleen (Christopher) “Cokie” Posey of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his girlfriend, Ann Bingham.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, August 16, 2024, from 10:00-Noon at Bethel Baptist Church, Galesburg. Services will begin at Noon at the church with Pastor Tyson Parks III officiating. The burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the Knox County Military Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to a Veterans Association. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting his family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com.
