At the latest Monmouth City Council meeting, a citizen presented a request for consideration in placing stop signs at 6th and 9th and 6th and 10th, following an incident involving children, explains Communications Director Ken Helms:

“That request came following an unfortunate traffic accident that occurred in that area. Our police chief gave a quick rundown on what the incident was and how that occurred. It involved two underage children that were on a very small minibike and the minibike ran through an existing stop sign that was there and got struck by an automobile and required some significant hospitalization. Council discussed that with the police chief on what the general layout would be if we introduce multiple stop signs around the area and if that could have prevented this accident. After this discussion, it was decided that given there was already a running of the stop sign and it was not a legal motor vehicle, that it was just a very unfortunate set of circumstances, so Council did not opt to put in two additional stop signs in that area, but that can always come back up for request.”

Helms noted the children were hospitalized but is unsure on their current status.
