The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that construction on the U.S. 34 bridge over the BNSF railroad just east of the Mississippi River in Henderson County begins Sept. 9.
The project involves bridge joint replacement, structural steel repairs, slopewall repairs and a bridge deck overlay. U.S. 34 on the bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction during the work, which is expected to be complete in June 2025.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
