United Red Storm Girls Golf Comes Through in the Clutch to Qualify for State Finals

The United Red Storm girls golf team qualified themselves for the Class 1A state finals by placing 3rd as a team at Monday’s sectional meet at the El Paso Golf Club. Despite shooting a little above their season average, the girls still shot a 387, which was two strokes behind Rockridge and Downs Tri-Valley’s score of 385 each. Sophomore Paige Christianson was the low-scorer for a talented and deep Red Storm roster, shooting a 91 to tie for 3rd place overall. After missing out on qualifying for the state finals in 2023 by a single stroke and having everyone returning this year, the expectations were high.

Athletic Director Jeremy Sharp said on Wednesday’s WRAM Morning Show that the girls very happy to check another goal off the list for this fall.

The state finals are normally the weekend following the sectional tournament but the tournament has been pushed off a week to accomodate the Jewish Holiday of Yom Kippur. The IHSA board of directors in August approved moving the state finals from this weekend to Oct. 18-19. Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism, begins sundown on Friday and ends at nightfall Saturday. Because the original state finals dates coincided with the holiday, IHSA executive director Craig Anderson said in a release that this change “will allow us to provide the most inclusive state series tournament possible.” The girls class 1A state final course is Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur. The Class 2A finals are held at Hickory Point Golf Course, also in Decatur, on the same weekend.
