Garnita J. “Joan” Powell, age 92, of Monmouth, Illinois, formerly of Burlington, Iowa, passed away at 9:29 AM on Friday, November 22, 2024 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. She was born April 2, 1932 in Rural Monmouth, Illinois, the daughter of Frankie and Aubley C. (Elliott) Mooday. Joan attended a rural school in the area. On March 26, 1932, she married Leonard Powell in Kirkwood, Illinois and he preceded her in death on January 16, 2007.

Joan retired in 1994 after many years at Western Stoneware, Banners Sylvania, and twenty-five years at General Electric. She loved cooking and gardening, always taking the time to make sure her home and yard were immaculate. Joan was an animal lover, and always gave to the animal rescues. Mostly, she loved her family.

Joan is survived by two daughters, Marjorie McCoy (late Gary) of Monmouth, Illinois and Teresa Lyon of Galesburg, Illinois; one son, Kenneth (Debbie) Bowling of Alexis, Illinois; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and her special friend, Kira (Sean) Schumm. Also surviving is her doggie, Paisley. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister Alberta Fillman, one brother Clifford Mooday, one niece, and one nephew. 

A funeral service for Garnita “Joan” Powell is planned for 11:00 AM on Friday, November 29, 2024 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Her family plans visitation from 10:00-11:00 AM prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery.
