Gregory Lynn Bates, 74, of Roseville, Illinois, passed away at 3:29 p.m., Saturday, November 16, 2024 in his home. He was born October 29, 1950, in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Charles Junior Bates. and Louise Erma McDonald. He was raised and educated in Roseville graduating from Roseville High School in 1968.
He served with the United States Army from 1969-1970.
Greg married Lindy Heaton on April 18, 1981, at the Roseville Baptist Church and she survives.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife; Lindy, Children; Sabrina (Corey) Brown of Donnellson, Iowa, Ashley (Aaron) Smith of Bartlett, Illinois; granddaughters, Bella, Jenna, Karra and Anna Brown and Ally Smith; one sister, Connie Cook; mothers-in-law, Carol Heaton of Missouri and Martha Brown of St. Claire, Missouri; nephews, Tony (Leslie) Cook and Brian (Jenny) Cook of Monmouth; great-nieces, Aubrey (Zach) McVey and Emily Cook of Monmouth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, uncle, Ray McDonald; father-in-law, Kendall Heaton and one brother-in-law, Bob Cook.
Greg worked with Roger Mecum doing concrete work and installing hog confinements. He later continued his construction work with his father for many years. He was a member of the Roseville American Legion and was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinal’s fan. He loved to play pool and was on a bowling league in his younger years. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters. He was an avid deer and wild game hunter with his dad and nephews. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. He liked to read, play games on the computer (pool and poker) and solve crossword puzzles.
A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, November 22, 2024. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2024, in the Point Pleasant Cemetery, Roseville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the wishes of the family and left in the care of the funeral home. Moore Memorial Home, Roseville, is handling the arrangements.
