The holiday season is here, and many people are already decorating for Christmas. Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat offers tips to keep in mind when stringing those holiday lights:

“With the holiday, some holiday safety tips; you want to make sure that when you are doing that, for the most part the lights are safe, it is maybe how you wire or arrange them. Running the cords, you want to make sure you use a large enough cord to supply the power to the lights or other display that you are putting up. Don’t put the cords underneath rugs, especially in the house. Outside, you want to make sure you are running those where they are not going to be tripped on or getting scuffed up or nicked. Just be careful where you are running those extension cords. Inside the house, people want to get out the candles, keep them where the kids aren’t going to reach them or the pets; they aren’t going to get knocked off onto the ground and make sure those are out if nobody is in the room, or nobody is in the house.”

Chief Rexroats also reminds homeowners to check their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms that they are working and up to code.
