Betty D. Gordon, 91, formerly of Abingdon, died at 9:22 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2025, in Allure of Knox County in Galesburg.

She was born March 8, 1933, in Chillicothe, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Dora Ellen (McCullough) Batson. She married William F. “George” Gordon on November 24, 1951, in Macomb. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1981, after over 30 years of marriage.

She is survived by a son, William “Bill” (Lisa) Gordon of Talladega, Alabama; four grandchildren, Joshua (Tonya) Gordon of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Billi Jo (Christopher) Harriel of New Port Richey, Florida, Alexandra VanScoyk of Havelock, NC, and Jacob Gordon of Chicago, Illinois; eight great-grandchildren, Shayla and Jasmine Gordon of Wood Dale, Illinois, Vivian and Oliver VanScoyk of Havelock, NC, and Kehlani, Jennesis, Avery, and Axel Harriel of New Port Richey, Florida; one brother, Charles “Chuck” (Linda) Batson of Abingdon; two, sisters, Shirley Blodgett and Mary Jo Russo, both of Abingdon; sisters-in-law, Joanne Batson of Abingdon and Louise Batson of Macomb; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Kathy “Katie” Gordon; five brothers, Robert, Ronald, Art, Harry, and Kenneth; and a sister Emma Lou “Patsy” Lambert.

Betty worked at Leath Furniture in Galesburg for many years and as the manager of Allied Building Center in Abingdon. She was a 1951 graduate of Abingdon High School. Betty loved her work and treasured her family above all else. She was selfless and patient, always putting others first. Her great-grandchildren will forever cherish the memories of their special visits and sleepovers.

She loved cooking and baking for her family. She was known for her pork chops, cheesy potatoes, pecan pie, peanut butter cookies with Hershey kisses and her Chex mix. She always made sure she had plenty to send home with you. There was always a pot of coffee on and hours of conversation around the kitchen table.

Betty’s days were filled with joy and purpose. She treasured every moment spent with her family. She loved shopping trips with her sister. May she rest in peace.

Cremation will be accorded. Private family service will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Feed My Lambs -Care of Abingdon Christian Church.
