Brown, Flynn Leads Scots Past Vikings on Saturday

The Monmouth College men’s basketball team won at home for the second straight Saturday with a win over the Lawrence Vikings on Saturday. The Fighting Scots (13-5, 7-2) have won three in a row as they swept the season series from the Vikings.

After the Vikings started the game with a 3-pointer, Zay Brown (Peoria, Illinois) scored four straight points and Declan Flynn (Monmouth, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer. Jordan Hill (Chicago, Illinois) put the Scots up 10-9 with a 3-pointer and Brown hit two free throws. Lawrence led 14-12 when Brown hit a 3-pointer and Ganon Greenman (Alpha, Illinois) made two free throws. Lawrence tied the game at 17 before Flynn scored but the visitors responded with a 6-0 run to lead by four. Cam Thomas (Arlington, Texas) and Brown made layups to tie the game and Thomas hit a 3-pointer for the lead. Hill knocked down a 3-pointer and Flynn scored for a 31-23 lead. Thomas answered a Vikings 3-pointer with one of his own to end the half with Monmouth up 34-26.

Brown started the second half with a 3-point play and HIll hit a long jumper. Brown made two more free throws for a 41-28 lead and Flynn scored Monmouth’s next four points. Lawrence went on a 7-0 run before Brown scored with 12:05 to play. Hill scored and Thomas hit a 3-pointer to put the Scots back up by 10 at 52-42. The Vikings responded with five straight points and pulled within four before Hill made a free throw. Brown scored on a turn-around jumper and Hill made it 57-51 with a layup.

Brown went over 20 points with a bucket but Lawrence got back within four at 59-55. Flynn drilled a 3-pointer with 2:30 to play and the Vikings turned the ball over. Kyle Taylor (Moline, Illinois) put the Scots up nine before the Vikings scored and called timeout with 1:36 left. Flynn made two free throws with 1:04 to play for a 66-57 lead. After Lawrence scored, the Scots broke the press for a wide open layup by Flynn.

Brown led the Scots with 22 points while Flynn added 19. Hill had 13 points and Thomas poured in 11 to give the Scots four in double digits. Flynn led Monmouth with 10 rebounds while Taylor had five assists and three rebounds. Flynn and Brown both had two blocks,
