Scots put four in double figures to win at Lawrence

Behind another double-double from freshman Zay Brown (Peoria, Illinois), the Monmouth College men’s basketball team finished the game on a 42-17 run to beat Lawrence 70-55 on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots (9-4, 3-1) had four players score in double digits as they won in Appleton for the first time in seven years.

Jordan Hill (Chicago, Illinois) got the scoring started with a jumper. Lawrence led 3-2 before the Scots scored 10 straight points. Brown, Cam Thomas (Arlington, Texas) and Hill all had buckets during the run. Hill scored again and Brennen McNally (Paw Paw, Illinois) made a pair of free throws for a 16-8 lead. Kyle Taylor (Moline, Illinois) added a bucket and Ganon Greenman (Alpha, Illinois) made two free throws for a 22-13 Monmouth lead. Lawrence responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead and they led 29-28 at the break.

After Lawrence used a 9-0 run to take a 38-28 lead, Brown scored four points in a row and Hill added a layup. Thomas scored five straight and Declan Flynn (Monmouth, Illinois) pulled the Scots within three at 44-41. Brown’s dunk made it a 1-point game and the Scots regained the lead on two free throws by Taylor. Jason Huber (Carpentersville, Illinois) made a layup and Brown had another dunk for a 49-44 Monmouth lead.

Taylor hit a 3-pointer and Flynn scored during a 12-3 Monmouth run. Brown added four points in that stretch to put the Scots up 61-50. Brown’s 3-point play with 2:04 to play made it 64-51 and Hill added a jumper. Taylor made two free throws as the clock went under a minute left and McNally had the last points of the game for the 70-55 win.

Brown led the Scots with 18 points while Taylor and Hill both had 14. Brown pulled down 14 rebounds while Taylor had six.. Brown also blocked four shots, a new career high and Hill led Monmouth with five assists and two steals.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Brown has scored at least 10 points in 12 games this season … He had three double-doubles, including two in the last three games … Hill has been in double figures 10 times and Taylor has scored at least 10 points five times … Thomas has hit 10 or more in seven games … The four blocks are a career-high for Brown /// Monmouth was 13-for-15 at the free throw line … Monmouth won the rebounding battle 40-25 … Monmouth leads the all-time series 77-49 but the last win in Appleton was Jan. 6, 2018 … The Scots are 9-14 against Lawrence under coach Skrivseth with a 4-8 mark on the road … The teams will play in Monmouth on Jan 25 … The Scots stay on the road Saturday with a game at Beloit after the 1 p.m. women’s game … The next home game is Saturday, Jan 18 against Ripon.
