FFA leaders across Illinois teamed up this Ag Literacy Week to help teach young students about agriculture and FFA. Illinois FFA Reporter Sidney Stiers shares that this year, FFA leaders will read pre-k through second graders the book The Soil in Jackie’s Garden by Peggy Thomas, focusing on soil lessons.
“That’s a really big topic right now in agriculture, people are starting to focus a lot more on what’s going on in their soil, how they can improve soil health to yield better crops and take better care of the land. So we’re really excited about this,” says Steirs. “All of our Section Presidents are leading this initiative. Illinois FFA is broken up into 25 sections of the state, and there is one section President per area, so they’re covering a lot of ground. But it’s also really exciting to see them in action with little kids as well, telling them about soil, but also helping them have a better plug into FFA, so hopefully some future FFA members out there.”
Ag Literacy Week is a week-long initiative that focuses on promoting agriculture, farming, and where our food comes from with the goal of raising awareness of the industry as a whole.
