Starting January 1, 2026, Iowa will be enacting its first in the nation E15 Fuel Standard. This standard requires the majority of fuel stations in Iowa to offer the sale of E15, or unleaded 88. Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig says 60 percent of fuel stations in Iowa are in compliance.
“Meaning that either a station is offering it today, or they could offer it through their system, or they’re going to qualify for one of these waivers. But that’s really good. We’re less than a year out, so we’re pushing really hard. We want to make sure that folks are in compliance and that we can make that available,” says Naig. “What I hear from marketers is if it’s available, consumers will use it. The last thing is, one is for your competitor to have it and you don’t, because guess what, folks are going to drive across the street and fill up there.”
Naig adds that in the last two years, reports found that each year, Iowans used 50 percent more E15.
