Weather Shifts Planting Decisions Nationwide, But Not Locally

Weather conditions going into the 2025 planting season have impacted farmers’ acreage decisions across the country. Justin Allaman, grain merchant with Consolidated Grain and Barge says locally, this isn’t happening much.

“We are blessed with fertile soils and really good farm ground. So I don’t know that around here we would see major shifts like you would in other parts of the country, definitely down south or of these more marginal acres,” says Allaman. “ And soybeans aren’t the only things that might take acres away from corn. There is also wheat or cotton or other crops like that in other parts of the country, and those aren’t necessarily profitable as well.“

According to the 2025 Prospective Planting Reports released March 31, farmers intend to plant 95.3 million acres of corn in 2025, a 5.2% increase of 4.7 million acres compared to corn planted last year. Soybean projections from the report estimated 83.5 million acres, down 4 percent from last year.
