The Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes Baseball squad won a class 1A regional championship over the United Red Storm in Stronghurst on Saturday. The Tornadoes jumped on the board early, scooting across 3 runs in the top of the first inning, thanks to a double from Drey Anderson scoring a pair of Tornado base runners. Abingdon-Avon added on two innings later, scoring a solo run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from Owen Timmons. The Red Storm rallied late in the game, loading the bases in the fifth and sixth inning but they were unable to get across any runs across the plate. The Tornadoes hold on, winning the championship plaque by a score of 4-0. Justin Keener was lights out on the mound for the Tornadoes, getting the win, throwing 6+ innings, allowing four hits and no runs, while striking out eight Red Storm batters. Ian Leffler gets the tough loss for the Red Storm, throwing all seven innings, allowing only two hits and four runs while striking out 13. At the dish for the Tornadoes, Drey Anderson led the way, going 1-for-3 and garnering two rbi’s.
The Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes will move on to the Sectional Semi-final on Wednesday facing off against Jacksonville Routt.
