It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected loss of our beloved son and brother. Steven Gaylord, age 56, was born January 22, 1968, in Russellville, Arkansas to Charles and Sharon Warnick Gaylord.
He grew up in Wataga and Galesburg, graduating from ROWVA High School in 1986 and later attended Carl Sandburg College, graduating with honors, receiving degrees in IT and certification as a CNC operator.
After high school, he proudly served in the Marine Corps, stationed in Japan. Upon returning to Galesburg, he worked at Maytag until it’s closure. He then worked for Machine and Grind and was last employed at Galesburg Walmart.
Steve was a quiet man and preferred the solitude of home rather than being out among the masses. If you were a friend, this “quiet” person could literally talk your head off about any topic. He had a generous nature and was always willing to help people in need. He was creative from early childhood, artistic, a self-taught woodworker, an IT expert and a great cook. Steve had a passion for learning as evidenced by his collection of books. He had a love for animals and had several dogs and cats throughout his life. He was of Christian faith.
He is survived by his mother, Sharon DeGroot of Peoria, Arizona; sister, Rachel Rochford Bergren of Henderson, Nevada; brothers, Christopher Gaylord of Sevierville, Tennessee and Michael Gaylord of Galesburg and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and both maternal and paternal grandparents.
No visitation is planned. Cremation was accorded and an inurnment with Military Honors will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations in his honor may be sent to Critter Cove Wildlife Rescue and Rehab, 625 Fleisher Road, Galesburg, Illinois 61401. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting his family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
