City Council Meeting: July 21, 2025

  • Public Hearing: Held at 5:45 PM to discuss the USDA Downtown Sewer Grant at 100 East Broadway.
  • Meeting Details: The 6:00 PM council meeting, conducted under Robert’s Rules of Order, approved all agenda items:
    • Approved minutes from July 7, 2025, and executive sessions from April 21 and May 19, 2025.
    • Approved bills under the consent agenda.
    • Received updates on Huston Building (100 block West 1st Ave.) renovations – everything is progressing well. Demolition and cleaning have been completed. They have been working with BCZ Engineering out of Galesburg on the final design. Windows should be replaced shortly. The final design calls for 10 apartments in the upper level. 
    • Presented Bill Hart with a Service Recognition Award. Bill has served the city for 35 years as the wastewater superintendent. 
    • Passed Resolution 25-004, appointing a new IMRF Designee. The new designee is Kathy Norris. IMRF handles non-pension retirement for employees. 
    • Held an executive session on city property sales and collective bargaining, with no public actions reported.

Monmouth Police Department: June 2025 Highlights

  • Citations: Issued 49 citations in June 2025 (down from 65 in June 2024), with year-to-date totals at 356 (2025) versus 278 (2024).
  • Arrests: Consistent enforcement noted, though some data was unclear due to formatting issues.
  • Focus: Chief Switzer emphasized ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and order.

Monmouth Fire Department: June 2025 Highlights

  • Emergency Responses: Handled 68+ incidents in June, contributing to 802 year-to-date:
    • 67 Rescue & EMS incidents (e.g., EMS calls, vehicle accidents).
    • 7 hazardous condition responses (e.g., gas leaks, power line issues).
    • Data tracked using U.S. Fire Administration and Illinois State Fire Marshal-compliant software.
  • Training: Completed sessions on Reading Smoke, Transitional Attack, and Patient Packaging; conducted Active Shooter tabletop exercise with MPD.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Participated in Way to Freezing for Food at Save-A-Lot.
    • Hosted station tours for YMCA Camp Meskwaki, Energy League, and Strong Families event at Lincoln Homes.
  • Equipment Updates:
    • All fire truck pumps and station sprinkler systems passed annual inspections.
    • FEMA-funded fire safety trailer and Station 1 LED sign nearing completion.
  • Personnel:
    • Six applicants passed entry-level testing to fill two vacancies.
    • New Captain promotional list in progress following Dan Chard’s promotion.
