The Abingdon-Avon Tornado football squad is looking to bounce back from a (3-6) season in 2024. The Tornadoes were (3-5) on the small school division side of the LincolnLand Conference. After a rough start to the season that included games against playoff qualifiers Princeville, Stark County, Rushville/Industry and Annawan/Wethersfield, A-Town was sitting at (1-4) through the first five contests last fall. They would rebound in a big way in the second half of the season, splitting their final four contests, scoring 122 total points during that stretch. Tornado head coach Rick Quinn hopes to take that momentum into this season.
Quarterback is one of the most important positions in all levels of football, and maybe more so in Coach Quinn’s intricate offense. After two seasons with 2024 graduate Drey Anderson at quarterback, junior Jamil Johnson will take over the reigns of the offense. Quinn is hoping Johnson will start another 2-year run at the position and that his lack of experience at the varsity level could very well be countered with his athleticism.
The Tornadoes will start 2025 on Friday night at home against Annawan/Wethersfield in a LincolnLand Small School Division match up. This will be the third year of the LincolnLand Conference, which joined the Lincoln Trail and Prairieland Conferences before the 2023 season. Besides A-Town and Annawan/Wethersfield on the small school side of the conference is defending division champ Stark County, United, Rushville/Industry, ROWVA/Williamsfield, South Fulton and Havana.
