A new Illinois law taking effect in 2026 aims to make transferring college credits easier for students across the state.

Senate Bill 1958 requires colleges and universities to improve how credits transfer between institutions, especially for students moving from community colleges to four-year schools.

Supporters say the change will help students avoid losing credits, reduce extra tuition costs, and stay on track to graduate on time. Locally, the law could benefit students transferring from Carl Sandburg College, as well as those transferring into Monmouth College.
