Move Over Law Expanded to Protect More Roadside Workers in Illinois

Another Illinois law taking effect in 2026 will expand the state’s Move Over law. Monmouth Police Chief Joe Switzer says drivers will need to slow down and move over for more types of vehicles.

“Now includes tow trucks, road maintenance vehicles, not just police, fire and ambulance vehicles. When you’re driving down the road, you see a tow truck doing its thing, hooking up to a car, you’ve got to slow down, move over for those vehicles also.”

The change is designed to better protect roadside workers.
