A new Illinois law taking effect in 2026 will tighten requirements for how firearms are stored inside the home. City of Monmouth Police Chief Joe Switzer explains what the law means for gun owners.
“It directly creates new criminal liability for improper storage of firearms that you have in your home. It says that you have to have them locked in a secure safe or a location when there are children and other people around that shouldn’t have access to those guns. There’s a penalty associated with that.”
Chief Switzer adds that a violation of this could cause a penalty of up to $10,000.
