Knox College Choir Concert

GALESBURG — The Knox College Choir, directed by Laura Lane, professor of music, presents its Fall Concert at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 4, in Kresge Recital Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert features works by Russian, Italian, French, Estonian, American, and Haitian composers. It includes “Autumn Landscapes,” by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, about various aspects of nature in the early fall, and “Veniki,” a traditional Russian folk song known as a “tongue-twister” because the text is meaningless and exists solely to express the sounds of the words.

“Hymne au Soleil,” by the French composer Lili Boulanger, will showcase soloist Meghan Mohn, mezzo-soprano, and two pianists, Casey Dierlam and Mary Harlan, on the challenging and complex piano accompaniment.

Another selection, “Super flumina Babylonis” by Palestrina, is “one of our all-time favorite Renaissance motets,” said Lane. “It’s a difficult work due to its imitative polyphony, independence of the four parts, constantly changing mode and deeply expressive melodies.”

Founded in 1837, Knox College is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois. Knox enrolls students from 48 states and U.S. territories and 51 countries. Knox’s “Old Main” is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
