Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 6, 2019

Basketball

The United Red Storm boys basketball team hosted the Southeastern Suns for a non-conference contest at the Fieldhouse at United High School. The Red Storm jumped out to a 22-14 lead in the first quarter but the Suns would come back to tie things up at 29 going into the half. The game remained close all the way through the second half. Declan Flynn’s 3-pointer with three seconds left in the game to tie it at 52. Following a Southeastern timeout, the Sun’s Danny Stephens hit shot from just inside the halfcourt line to give his team a 55-52 win. Stephens led the (3-3) Suns with 25 points. Flynn led the (4-2) Red Storm with 22 points. Nolan Leffler and Jacob Dutton had eight points apiece for United as well. The Red Storm will try to get back in the win column with a home game against ROWVA/Williamsfield tonight at United High School.

In high school girls basketball, the A-Town Tornadoes beat Wethersfield 70-56. Ashley Jones and Emma Ginther combined for 56 of the Lady Tornadoes 70 points, with Jones getting 30 and Ginther totaling 26. A-Town improves to (4-1) with the win.

In Biggsville last night, Mendon Unity broke open a close game against West Central, outscoring the Heat 22-8 in the 3rd quarter of their non-conference game. Unity would go on for a 60-48 win. Mady Reed had 25 points for the Heat. Carley Lafary chipped in with 16 points as well for West Central. The Heat get their first loss of the season and are now (4-1).

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls hadn’t beaten Rock Island since 2014 and that streak will continue as the Lady Rocks defeat Galesurg 53-39 at John Thiel Gym in Galesburg. No player got in double figures for the Silver Streaks but they were led in scoring by Riley Jenkins with eight points. Hannah Simmer had 21 for Rock Island. Galesburg falls to (4-3) overall and (0-2) in the Western Big Six Conference.

Elsewhere, the Camp Point Central/Southeastern co-op beat Macomb 63-45 to keep the Macomb winless on the year at (0-7).

ROWVA/Williamsfield lost to Elmwood 48-36. Abby Stowe led R/W with six points.

Junior High

8th grade girls basketball regional championship games were played last night. Monmouth-Roseville lost to Sherrard 27-15. Leading scores for the Titans Elise Blaesing with 7 pts and Brianna Woodard with 4 pts. The Titans finished their season 17-8.

The ICS 8th grade girls played Annawan in the Regional Championship in Woodhull. ICS got down early 13-2 after 1st quarter but turned it around to get the win 24-23. Reece Bertelsen led all scorers with 12 points. ICS will play Cambridge at 6:30 next Wednesday in Williamsfield for the sectional championship.

The West Central girls fell to Lewistown 50-34 in the Lewistown regional title game.

In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Jr High basketball team took on Churchill. The 7th grade Titans fell 28-25 to the Blue Streaks. Leading the way for the Titans in scoring was Andy Myers with 8 points and Martwan Butler with 7. The 8th grade Titans also lost to the Blue Streaks 46-20. Nico Avendano led Monmouth-Roseville with five points.

The ICS Trojans also lost a pair of games to Rockridge last night at ICS Junior High in Monmouth. The ICS 7th grade lost 47-17. They were led by six points by Thomas Missavage. The Trojan 8th grade also fell to the Rockets 76-24. ICS was led in scoring by Leo Mahoney’s eight points.
