The Monmouth Cup Golf Tournament was played this weekend featuring 12-man teams made up of men that are members from Gibson Woods Golf Course and the Monmouth Country Club. The two-day, bi-annual Monmouth Cup is a Ryder Cup-style format. Gibson Woods, which captured the Cup in 2016 and 2018, was captained by this year’s Monmouth City Tournament champ Jake Sottos. Chris Anderson was in charge of the Monmouth Country Club squad. Twenty-seven holes were played on Saturday at Gibson Woods, with 3 different scoring methods. Each 12-man team broke up into two-man teams, playing best ball, alternating shot and Super Ball. Gibson Woods won the best ball competition 3.5-2.5. They would extend the lead to 7-5 after the alternating shot format. Both teams would garner three points apiece after the final 9-holes of super ball to give Gibson Woods a narrow 10-8 lead heading to the Monmouth Country Club on Sunday. Gibby would dominate the 18-hole individual matches 8.5-3.5, bringing the final score to 18.5 for Gibson Woods to 11.5 for the Monmouth Country Club. Former City Tournament champ Justin Martin went (4-0) in his matches to lead Gibson Woods. Another former city champ, Scott McClintock went (3-1) for the Country Club.
