Monmouth-Roseville junior Landon Montroy has qualified for his 2nd straight IHSA Class 2A Track and Field State Finals. Landon placed 3rd in the discus event with a toss of just over 151 feet in the sectional meet in Galesburg. That was six feet further than the minimum distance to move on to the finals in Charleston this weekend. Last spring, he was also a 2A state qualifier, but in a different event. Montroy threw the shot put in Charleston, taking 25th place in the state. Getting there this year didn’t come without some trepidation. In the sectional meet last Thursday, Montroy scratched on his first two throws and it came down to his final throw to get qualified, which he did. Here’s Landon with his thoughts going into his last try.
Showing the overall athleticism that he showed on the football field this past fall, Landon has also ran some sprint events and been on several relay teams during regular season meets this spring. Landon will throw the discus in Charleston on Friday in the class 2A preliminary round starting at approximately 11am. Going into the prelims, he’s seeded 24th out of 46 total throwers. The final round of the state finals will be on Saturday.
Local athletes participating in the class 1A preliminaries today include United High School’s Parker Tinkham. He qualified for this weekend’s state finals in the high jump event by placing 2nd in the Mercer County sectional in Aledo last week. Tinkham is seeded 38th out of 43 jumpers.
Abingdon-Avon has a pair of athletes in Charleston today. James Shuey is taking part in the 1600 meter run, where he’s seeded 7th out of 32 runners. Carter Stroot is seeded 5th out of 36 runners in the 200 meter dash.
Knoxville’s Tysean Pullens is seeded 18th in the high jump event today.
