According to the National Eye Institute, by 2050 the number of people in the United States with cataracts is expected to double. Dr. Carlton Fenzl, Ophthalmologist at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, reports how one should protect their eyes and what will be noticed if cataracts are forming:

“So you can try to help prevent formation by using sunglasses. We know that sunlight can try to advance it slightly, but a majority of the time it is very difficult to prevent it from getting worse. So we actually have to surgically remove it. People will notice symptoms like blurry vision, but the most common symptom that people have is glare when they are driving at night,” Dr. Fenzl states.

If you experience cataracts, contact OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth at 734-3141.
