Gomes’ Goal, Sanchez’s Save Help CSC to Draw vs. Pioneers

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team survived playing a man down in the final minutes of regulation and stopped a penalty kick in the second overtime to earn a 1-1 draw with Prairie State on Sunday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (1-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 Region IV) conceded a penalty kick in the eighth minute, but they were able to get the equalizer in the 61st. After Sandburg’s initial shot in the box was blocked, the ball bounced to Pedro Henrique Gomes (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Objetivo Riebeirao Pires), who rocketed a volley into the net.

Gomes, though, left the Chargers down a man for the rest of the match in the 84th minute after he was given his second yellow card of the contest.

The Pioneers (2-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 Region IV), who had won their first two matches by a combined score of 20-0, thought they had scored the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute off the foot of Andres Osorio, but the play was waved off by the linesman for being offside.

Prairie State had the best scoring chance in the first overtime period, but Chargers keeper Felipe Petry (Barao, Brazil/Instituto Estadul de Educacao) made a diving stop to his right for his 10th save of the contest. Moments later, however, Petry left the game after he was shaken up after being hit while trying to make a play on the ball in the air.

Petry was relieved by Iker Sanchez (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle), who made the biggest play of the match in the second OT period. Prairie State was awarded a penalty kick in the 107th minute. Michael Fulop, who scored the Pioneers’ first goal, took the shot, but his attempt toward the left post was stopped by Sanchez to preserve the tie.
