GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team opened its season with a decisive 3-0 victory over Scott on Thursday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (1-0) put 12 shots on goal in the contest, compared to just two for the Eagles.

Sandburg opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as freshman Kyle Neacy (Bunbury, Australia/SEDA) scored on a free kick from just inside the midfield line. Neacy’s kick was high and on net, but the Eagles’ keeper had the ball go through his hands as he jumped to catch it, giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

Sandburg doubled its advantage in the 46th minute after the Eagles were given a penalty for taking down a Chargers player the box. Freshman Mohamed Elshafie (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle) converted the PK with a shot inside the right post for a 2-0 lead.

The Chargers added another tally in the 54th minute when freshman Arlen Navarro (Miami, Fla./Sports Leadership & Management) scored on a run down the right side off a beautiful lead pass from freshman Lucas Mitihiro Sueyoshi (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Objetivo Ribeirao Pires).

Freshman Felipe Petry (Barao, Brazil/Instituto Estadul de Educacao) kept a clean sheet, thanks in part to a smothering attack that helped Sandburg dominate possession for much of the contest. Petry was forced to make just two saves, with both coming in the match’s final 4 minutes.
