West Central Head Start Currently Enrolling Students for Upcoming School Year

Share

West Central Head Start is currently undergoing recruitment for the upcoming school year, with 312 students currently enrolled.

Head Start is a federally-funded, school readiness program that serves children from birth to five years old in order to prepare them for Kindergarten. Head Start serves three counties with classrooms in Abingdon, Knoxville, Galesburg, Monmouth, and Oquawka. Bussing is available for some Head Start schools.

A certified birth certificate and income verification is all that is necessary to enroll a child into this free program.

Head Start Family Services Manager Lisa Medina-Foshay explains how Head Start works:

“The main points I like to stress is we use teaching strategies there’s creative curriculum, so there’s actually school programs, that’s what our school does.

In addition to that, our children are evaluated within the first 45 days of them being in class so we can know exactly where they’re at in their learning. So then each teacher gears an independent program for each child, so that this child is learning colors while we have other children who are learning to read.”

To enroll your child, email Mary Reed, Executive Director at mreed@westcentralheadstart.org or call 734-6356 for more information. The first day of the Head Start school year is September 3.
