Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Nov. 19, 2019

Basketball

The United Red Storm are in Woodhull this week for the Ridgewood Thankgiving tourney. The Red Storm fall to the Rockridge Rockets 32-21. Jennifer Shimmin led United with five points, while Karragan Sperry had four points. Also in Woodhull, the Orion Chargers defeated Galva 48-41 and it was Mercer County beating Ridgewood 56-44. The Monmouth-Roseville Titans open up their 2019 campaign in Woodhull tonight with a game against Mercer County at 6:00 in the junior high gymnasium. The United Red Storm get back on the floor with a 6:00 game against Orion in the high school gym. Knoxville also gets their first game in tonight, taking on Rockridge at 7:30 in the high school gym.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes, West Central, ROWVA/Williamsfield and West Prairie are playing a round-robin tournament in Oneida. Last night’s opening schedule included Abingdon-Avon beating the hosts, ROWVA/Williamsfield, 58-36, despite trailing 25-23 at the half. Ashley Jones scored 26 points and Emma Ginther chipped in with 16 for the winning Tornadoes. In the first match up of the night, it was West Central over West Prairie 63-30. West Central’s Carley Lafary led all scorers with 19 points and Mady Reed added 17. Tonight’s schedule includes West Prairie vs. Abingdon-Avon at 6 and ROWVA/Williamsfield vs. West Central at 7:30.

The Macomb Bombers are hosting their own tournament this week. The Bombers played a very good Pleasant Plains ballclub. Macomb would fall 91-41. It was Illini Bluffs over Havana 60-29 in the first game of the night. The tournament is off tonight.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville boys basketball teams swept Galva at home in Roseville. The 7th Grade won 50-19 to improve to 3-1 on the season. Leading scorers for the Titans were Andy Myers with 10 and Kayne Bayless, Ivan Godina and Jackson Thomas with 6 points each. The 8th grade Titans improved to 2-2 with a 45-24 victory. Leading the way for Monmouth-Roseville was Darrion Smith with 10 and Nico Avendano with 9. Monmouth-Roseville will host Lombard on Thursday in Roseville.

The ICS Trojan boys swept LaHarpe/Dallas City last night in LaHarpe. The ICS 7th graders won 33-24, led by Steven Gibbs 13 points and Nick Huston’s eight points. The Trojan 8th grade won 36-22. They were led by Steven Gibbs again, this time scoring eight points. Jake Steele also had seven.
