Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Nov. 27, 2019

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans blew a big halftime lead in their Orion Tip-Off Classic opening game loss to Sherrard on Monday night but last night found themselves trailing by nine points at the half to the Ridgewood Spartans. The Titans only scored three points in the 3rd quarter on Monday but came out of the break on fire against Spartans on Tuesday night, scoring 24 points to get the game tied at 42 after three quarters. The game would eventually go into overtime, the second time in as many nights for Ridgewood, who beat Erie-Prophetstown on Monday in OT. Monmouth-Roseville made a few more plays than Ridgewood in the extra period got a nice 73-69 win to even their tournament record at (1-1). Ridgewood is also (1-1) in pool play as well. Junior, Quincy Talivaa led Monmouth-Roseville with 30 points in just his second game of varsity basketball in his career. Senior Rashaun King, who transferred into the school district from Mercer County last spring, had 22 points. Ganon Greenman had 29 for Ridgewood and Lucas Kessinger had 25 for the Spartans as well. After falling on Monday night, the Titans need some help to get themselves a chance to get to the title game, but the Sherrard Tigers took a big step towards a title game berth with a 50-46 win over Erie-Prophetstown in the final game of the night to go to (2-0) in pool play. Monmouth-Roseville needs to beat Erie on Friday afternoon at 4:30 and have Ridgewood knock off Sherrard to create a 3-way tie and then take their chances with the tie-breaker. In the other pool in Orion, Abingdon-Avon played their first pool play game last night vs. Orion, who was also playing their first game of the week. Orion got out to a 35-22 lead after the first half and held on for a 57-45 win. Graham Struhs led A-Town with 15 points and Ryan Adolphson chipped in with 13 for A-Town. The tournament continues tonight with Abingdon-Avon playing Alleman at 5:30 and Orion plays Mercer County at 7:00. The Monmouth-Roseville JV beat Alleman 48-34 in the JV tournament at Orion. The Titans will play at 12:30 in the semi-finals on Friday afternoon.

The West Central Heat and United Red Storm are in Williamsfield this week for the ROWVA/Williamsfield Invitational Tournament. The Heat win big over Galva 65-19 to move to (2-0) and the Red Storm fall to Henry-Senachwine 44-41 and fall to (1-1) for the week. No details for either game were given. In the final game of the night Riverdale beat ROWVA/Williamsfield 55-47. West Central is the only (2-0) team so far, with four other teams at (1-1). The tournament takes tonight off before resuming on Friday afternoon.

The Knoxville Blue Bullets lost their first game of the Brimfield Turkey Tournament. The Bullets lose to Tremont 63-53 and are (1-1) in the five team, round-robin tournament.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys beat Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 73-62 behind Jaylin McCants’ 33 points and ten rebounds.

The (5-0) Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team matched up with another undefeated team in West Hancock last night in Warsaw. West Hancock was the only no-loss team at the end of the night as they get a 62-49 win over the Titans. Ryley Huston had a career-high 30 points for Monmouth-Roseville.

The United Red Storm girls got their second win of the season, beating Erie-Prophetstown 29-27. Luci Kane led United with eight points.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls fall to Geneseo 54-51 in overtime in each team’s first Western Big Six Conference contest.

Junior High

Junior high 7th grade girls basketball regional championships were played around the area last night. The ICS Trojan girls hosted the Annawan Bravettes at ICS Jr. High in Monmouth for a class 1A regional title game. The Trojans lose 28-22 to end their season at (15-5). Addison Gillen led ICS with 10 points.

The United Red Storm 7th graders lost to Lewistown 43-25 in the class 2A regional championship game in Lewistown.
