Two Dee Hyler free throws with two seconds left iced the game for Monmouth in a 71-66 win at UW-Whitewater Friday night, the Scots first ever win over the Warhawks.

The Warhawks had built a nine-point lead of 64-55 with 5:13 left in the game before Justin Batterton’s free throw began a 16-2 run to close out the Scots’ third straight win. Will Carius followed Batterton with a bucket and Dee Hyler added a fast break layup to cut the margin to 64-60 with 3:39 to play. A Jake Rueter free throw and two more by Carius pulled Monmouth within one at 64-63 with just over two minutes to play.

Batterton – who punched in 11 points on the night – added two more throws with 2:09 remaining to give Monmouth a brief 65-64 lead before Whitewater countered with a bucket to regain the lead for the final time at 66-65 with 1:50 to play. Carius added his final two points on a 33-point, 11-rebound night with a pair of free throws to put the Scots ahead for good. A steal by Tyler Houston on the Warhawks’ next possession set up a Monmouth timeout for the final 1:02.

Hyler made good on the timeout, hitting a jumper in the lane for a 69-66 Monmouth lead with 43 seconds to play. His final two free throws for his 10th points of the night sealed the deal with two seconds left and a 71-66 lead.

The Scots play at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Sunday at 2 p.m.
