Joyce Arlene (Manchester) Carr, 89, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away on November 26, 2019 in Madison, Wisconsin. She was born May 3, 1930, in Dorchester, Massachusetts to Arthur Edward and Kathryn Martha Simmons (Manchester) Manchester. She was the wife of the late Allen Wing Carr of Galesburg. She was the younger sister of the late Arthur Hobart Manchester, who died in infancy.

Joyce grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. She attended Martin Milmore School and Prince School of Boston, and graduated from Brighton High School, Brighton, Massachusetts in 1948.

Joyce and Allen married on April 15, 1950 in Seabrook, New Hampshire. After their wedding, they raised their family in Tiverton, Portsmouth, and Bristol, Rhode Island and Wayland and Boston, Massachusetts and, in 1964, moved to Galesburg.

In her early married life, Joyce was a homemaker and worked as a waitress for the former Sunderland’s Restaurant of Tiverton and as a clerk in the Meteorology Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She also worked at the former Kline’s department store in Galesburg. Joyce later attended Carl Sandburg Jr. College, attaining a degree in practical nursing. After graduating, she worked in the Chemical Dependency Unit of Cottage Hospital until she retired in 1993.

Joyce was also a prolific and accomplished artist. She enjoyed exercising her talents painting with acrylics and oils, drawing portraits with charcoal and pastels, and sculpting with clay. Later in life, painting animals and flowers on numerous rocks was one of her specialties. Joyce had a terrific imagination and found many outlets for her creativity. Besides paper and canvas, she would paint on different household items. Allen used to say, “Be careful! If you stand still too long, you might get painted!”

Most of all, Joyce cherished her family. Survivors include her children, Glenn and his wife Sue of rural Warren County, Illinois, Daryl and his wife Peggy of Galesburg, Diane and her husband Winn of rural Keosauqua, Iowa, Kay of Carbondale, Illinois, Stuart of Galesburg, and Jenny and her husband Steve of Madison, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Laura, Sean, Joe, Heidi, Emmy, Benji, and Riley; and her great grandchildren, Andrew, Oliver, and Wyatt. The family thanks the staff at Chamomile Assisted Living of Madison and Agrace Hospice of Fitchburg, Wisconsin for their kindness and caring in the last months of Joyce’s life.

Cremation will be accorded as requested by Joyce. A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at a later date to be announced. Burial of her ashes will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Tiverton, Rhode Island, also at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, and Agrace Hospice of Fitchburg. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is handling arrangements for the family. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
