The McDonough County Branch of the NAACP, along with the Western Illinois University Black Student Association and WIU Chapter of NAACP hosted an MLK Remembrance Day on Monday, Jan. 18th.
“The first thing that all of us need to do is to make sure that we pray. I don’t care if you don’t believe in God, but whatever you believe in, make sure that you honor it and that you pray. The second thing I need for us to do is to make sure that we are protecting ourselves and everything that we do. Think about the fact that people fought, bled, and died for us to be here. We need to be more proactive instead of reactive. We need to have a plan, because if we plan or fail to plan, we plan to fail. So make sure that you have a plan. We want to make sure that we are being productive citizens in everything that we do. I need to make sure that everybody out there is registered to vote. Not only registered to vote, but on Election Day, make sure we are exercising that right to vote.”
That was keynote speaker Teresa Haley, president of the Illinois NAACP State Conference, who was featured at the virtual program at WIU.
