Republicans in the Illinois House fear the upcoming lame duck legislative session will include a tax increase.
Representative Tom Demmer of Dixon says now is not the time to be asking Illinoisans for more money but warns it’s a possibility since the democratic majority released more than a hundred bills over the weekend that could be amended.
“Here we are getting ready to reconvene legislature for the first time since May and we have hundreds of bills that get released with really no indication of what is going to be the content of those.”
No agenda has been set for the final days of the current general assembly, although topics that could come up include COVID relief and police reforms.
House GOP leader Jim Durkin says Democrats may turn to taxpayers to shore up a big budget deficit caused by the pandemic, lack of a federal bailout and the failure of the graduated income tax proposal in November.
“Now after voters just sent the Democrats a message to Madigan and his cohorts, will be trying to sneak a tax increase. Yes. Sneak a tax increase into the lame duck session. Call your state representative now. Let them know you are not for more taxes and they must reject Madigan as Speaker of the next General Assembly.”
