3 Freshmen Pace Sandburg Women’s Hoops in Opener at Highland

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team had three freshmen score in double figures, but Highland rallied from a halftime deficit to top the Chargers 79-72 in Sandburg’s season opener Tuesday night.

The Chargers (0-1), playing their first game under rookie head coach McKenna Weaver, took a 41-39 lead into intermission after outscoring the Cougars 22-19 in the second quarter. Highland, though, regained the lead by outscoring Sandburg 24-17 in the third and held a 16-14 edge over the Chargers in the fourth.

Freshman Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reed Springs) scored nine of her team-leading 15 points in the second half for Sandburg. The Chargers also got 12 points from Addison Eger (Mendon, Ill./Unity) and 10 from Paysley Carver (Elmwood, Ill./Elmwood).

Highland’s Abby Barr led all players with 25 points. Tyra Clark added 23 points for the Cougars.
