Illinois Could Be First State to Eliminate Cash Bail

Share

Illinois could become the first state to eliminate all cash bail payments for jail release before trial as part of a sweeping reform bill and it now awaits the governor’s signature. Some law enforcement officials disagree with this concept including local Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards:

The bill gives agencies two years to prepare, with cash bail being wiped out on Jan. 1, 2023. The complete bill is 764 pages and includes other measures of criminal justice reform such as the requirement for the usage of body cameras for all law enforcement by 2025.   Edwards says there was no input by law enforcement agencies in regard to the policies in the reform bill that passed during the lame- duck session.
