Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 23, 2021

Basketball

The United Red Storm boys basketball team took another huge step towards a Lincoln Trail Conference championship last night. The Red Storm hosted the Princeville Princes at the Fieldhouse at United High School. The Princes were tied with Wethersfield for second place in the conference, with both a game behind United. After a tight first quarter ended in a 14-all tie, United outscored the Princes 18-9 in the second quarter take a nine point lead at the halftime break. The Red Storm extended the lead to 13 at the end of the 3rd quarter and then maintained a double digit lead in the fourth. The 57-41 United victory moved them to (10-0) overall and (6-0) in the LTC. Princeville dropped to (6-3) and (4-2). Cormaic Flynn tied with senior Jackson Bergren for game-high honors with 19 points each to lead United. Declan Flynn scored nine points and went over the 1,000 career point mark in the process. Wethersfield beat Galva 69-33 to remain a game behind United with three conference games left for both teams. United beat Wethersfield 71-66 last Friday to hold the tie-breaker. United will take on Ridgewood on Friday night at the Fieldhouse. The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball team traveled to Macomb last night. The Bombers jumped out to a ten point lead at the end of the first quarter at 15-5 and extended the lead to 29-14 at the half. Despite a couple of runs in the second half, Macomb would go on to win 55-39. Charlie Fletcher led Monmouth-Roseville with 13 points. Leighton Holthaus led Macomb with 17 points. The Bombers nailed eight, three-pointers in the game, three by Holthaus. Macomb is (7-0), while the Titans fall to (2-1).

West Central lost to Mercer County 60-48. Brandon Olson scored 22 points to lead West Central.

It was the Knoxville Blue Bullets over Abingdon-Avon 72-58. David Hise led (6-1) Knoxville with 21 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Easton Schisler had a game-high 26 for A-Town.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys basketball team suffered their first loss of the season, losing to Rock Island 70-60 at the Fieldhouse on the GHS campus. Eric Price led Galesburg with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Galesburg is now tied with Rock Island for the Western Big Six Conference lead at (5-1). The Streaks are now (5-1) overall, as well.

In high school girls basketball last night, Mercer County edged out the West Central Heat 40-38. West Central’s 14-for-25 performance led their undoing. Mady Reed scored 13 to lead the Heat in scoring.

The United Red Storm girls fell to a solid Princeville Princes squad 5-19. Luci Kane led United with five points.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls lost to Rock Island 56-51 for their first loss of the year. Riley Jenkins had 16 points to lead Galesburg, now (8-1) overall and (5-1) in the Western Big Six Conference.

Bowling

The Galesburg Silver Streak Girls bowling team defeated United Township by a score of 2369 to 2124. Chloe Day had high game for Galesburg with a 203. She was closely followed by Casey Folger with a 202. Chloe Day lead the scoring for both teams with a 569 series.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg High School boys swimmers and divers beat Richwoods 122-64 in Galesburg. Getting individual wins for Galesburg was Josh Lee in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle races, Riley Stevenson in the 100 yard backstroke and 200 IM, Luke Foster in the 50 and 500 yard freestyle races and Zeke Kent in the 100 breaststroke. Galesburg was victorious in all three relays, as well.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high boys basketball teams traveled to Avon to take on the Abindon-Avon Tornadoes. The Trojan 7th grade won the first game of the night, 48-27. Andrew Way led all scorers in the game with 23 points. Abingdon-Avon earned a split on the night, capturing game two, 33-36. came out on top 33-26. Steven Gibbs had 10 for the Trojans.

In junior high volleyball action, the United 7th and 8th grade squads took on West Central. West Central won the 7th grade match 25-15, 22-25, 25-14. Kendall Mills led United with 5 kills. Sara Shimmin served 11 aces and also handed out 8 assists. United earned a split with a straight-set, 25-15, 25-18 win. Emma Austin had 4 kills while Jacey Hasten had 3. Cameron Anderson served 7 aces and also led in assists, with five.
