Macomb High School Looking for New Football Coach

According to Macomb High School Athletic Director Steve Horrell, Bomber varsity football coach Tony Westen has submitted his letter of resignation. No details on the situation have been released. Westen was hired in March of 2017 after former coach Kelly Sears stepped aside after 21 years leading the Bomber football program. Following Sears has been tough, as Sears won 121 games in his 21 years, including 12 playoff appearances. Sears guided Macomb to a class 3a semi-final appearance in 1998 and the quarterfinals in 2001 and 2011. They have not made the postseason since 2012. In his four seasons at Macomb, Westen finished (7-26), but did finish (4-2) this past season. To be fair, the first three seasons under Westen, Macomb did not have a stable conference in which to call home. That instability forced the Bombers to play teams that ranged from school enrollments of near 1,200 students to 300, with nearly all of the games against schools closer to the 1,000 student total. Currently, Macomb has landed in a much more stable situation, as they will play in the Prairieland Conference starting in the fall. This was Westen’s first football head coaching job. He spent several years turning around the Beardstown wrestling program. Macomb AD Steve Horrell says the search is on to find Westen’s replacement.
