Steven L. Cargill, age 74, of Morton, Illinois, passed away at 9:16 p.m. Thursday June 3, 2021 at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa. He was born April 8, 1947 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Fred and Eileen Brouse Cargill. On December 17, 1966, he married Donna Fox in Stronghurst.
Steve was a graduate of Stronghurst High School, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Illinois State University in Normal. He farmed for twenty years near Stronghurst, then worked as a computer tech for RLI Corporation in Peoria, retiring in 2015. He was an Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout Leader, and trained many young men to reach the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed following them in all their activities. He was a member of the Washington, Illinois Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, two daughters; Karyn (Ryan) Yates and Debra (Ken) Poretsky, both of Washington, IL, four grandchildren; A.J. Yates (and fiancee Angel Sheridan), Rylie Yates, Ethan Poretsky, and Sara Poretsky, three brothers; J.R. (Jan) Cargill of Gladstone, IL, Chuck (Cathy) Cargill of Stronghurst, IL, and Lonne (Mary Raes) Cargill of Smithshire, IL, and his father in law and mother in law; Wendell and Hazel Fox of Stronghurst. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister in infancy.
The funeral for Mr. Cargill will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday June 9, 2021 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Steve Minkler officiating. Burial will follow in the Stronghurst Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to PCS Boy Scout Troop 1, or St. Jude Children’s Hospitals.
