Mr. Robert “Joffre” Eyre, 80 of Galesburg, Illinois passed away Monday, February 3, 2025, at his home. He was born February 2, 1945, in San Angelo, Texas to Robert Jeanes and Betty Mae (Lee) Eyre.

Joff excelled at everything he did. He was a GHS scholastic honor student and outstanding athlete, lettering in basketball and golf all three years in high school. He played simultaneously on the sophomore and varsity basketball teams, perhaps the only player to do so prior to 1961. He was the State Golf tournament medalist in 1963 and led the team to the state team championship. GHS sports had not achieved a state championship since 1913 (50 years!) He finished 1st among 100 players.

He then enrolled at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Joff lettered in golf and was team captain his senior year at Northwestern. He was a chapter officer of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army and finished 1st in his class at OCS (Officer Candidate School). His AIT (Advanced Individual Training) was at Ft. Holabird Intelligence School in Baltimore, Maryland. After 3 years of service as a signal corps officer, he attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

His exceptional talent in the sport of golf took him to Tampa, Florida where he played on the “Satellite Tour” for a number of years. He later returned to Galesburg and was a caregiver to his aging parents. In 1989, the state championship golf team of 1963 was inducted into the inaugural “Athletic Hall of Fame”. He was also honored a second time (1998) when recognized for his individual medalist/1st place finish in 1963.

When his health began to decline, his sister Mary assisted him in his efforts to care for our parents. Mary then continued to be there for Joff in his years of need. The family also expresses gratitude to Jackie and Dana Underwood for their kindness and friendship in caring for Joff. God Bless you.

Joff’s life was one of: Duty, Honor, Sacrifice, Integrity, Country. He was a leader, an officer, and a gentleman, a soldier-brother to us all. He is survived by his brother John Eyre, two sisters Mary (Tom) Cerkez and Barbara (Ken) Rometti, and three beautiful nieces and their families whom he really loved.

Private Family Graveside services are scheduled for Monday, February 10, 2025, in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the Knox County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Public School Foundation or the Galesburg Public Library.

Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting his family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com
