Governor JB Pritzker Signs Legislation Increasing Access to Mental Health Care

Share

A package of new laws will increase access to mental health care in Illinois. One measure requires insurers to cover all medically necessary care for mental, emotional, nervous and substance abuse disorders. It was sponsored by Senator Laura Fine of Glenview.

“If your doctor told you that you have cancer and you need to receive eight treatments for chemotherapy, your insurance company would cover those eight treatments. So why should it be any different for mental health.”

The second new law requires communities to coordinate 9-1-1 with the new 9-8-8 service when it comes on line next summer. 9-8-8 will be a nationwide mental health crisis hotline.
