Should those who have already had COVID-19 and recovered get the vaccine? Dr. Harley Brooks, VP Chief Medical Officer and Regional Director of Multispecialty Services of the OSF HealthCare Upper West Region clarifies:
“Yes, unequivocally those who have had COVID-19 should be vaccinated against the virus because research shows the impact of the antibody response wanes over time and does vary depending on individual responses. The CDC interim clinical considerations still recommend getting the COVID vaccine after the symptoms are resolved if you are actively infected with COVID-19. Natural immunity may be variable and weak. Relying on natural immunity due to that fact is really not the best idea, plus even if you do develop a reasonable immune protection after recovering, it is not clear how long this immunity may last. Studies have suggested that the protection may last for 90 days or longer, but more studies are needed to get a better sense. Compared to natural exposure to the virus, vaccine doses are more consistent and directed. It does direct an antibody response.”
If you currently have COVID-19, Dr. Brooks informs waiting to get the vaccine after recovering from all symptoms and being cleared to discontinue isolation before receiving the vaccine.
