The Monmouth Cup Golf Tournament was played this weekend featuring 12-man teams made up of golfers that are members of the Monmouth Country Club against members of Gibson Woods Golf Course in a Ryder-Cup style tournament. Gibson Woods was looking to keep the Cup at home after their dominating 7 point victory last fall.

The two-day event started with a series of different events at the Country Club on Saturday and ending with 18 hole match play competition on Sunday at Gibson Woods. Saturday’s competition ended with the Country Club holding a slim 9.5-8.5 lead. The day started with 9-hole Best Ball pairs, with both teams capturing three wins apiece. The second event of the day was 9-hole Alternate Shot pairs, Gibson Woods claimed that event, winning four of the six matches. The final event was 9-hole Super Ball pairs. The Country Club bounced back to get 4 wins with a halved match. Leading the way for the Country Club was the duos of Scott Weber and Brendan Marshall and Jake Halcomb and Michael Blaesing. Those pairs each went (3-0). Ryan Stewart and Todd Lee were (3-0) for Gibson Woods.

The team captains each took turns matching up the match-play pairs for Sunday’s final day at Gibson Woods. The Country Club got off to a great start, winning five of the first eight matches, giving them a point cushion with four matches to play. Gibson would close the gap to one with one match remaining, needing only to tie the event to keep the Cup. The Country Club wins the final pairing and the match 16.5 to 15.5. Weber and Blaesing continued to burn up the fairways, ending the weekend with four wins each.
