Man accused of hitting girlfriend with a hammer

The McDonough / Schuyler County 911 Dispatch Center received a 911 call at approximately 5:37 p.m. from a female stating that she had just been hit with a hammer by her boyfriend. The female caller stated her boyfriend, Shawn K. Shirey, 45, of LaHarpe, IL, had fled the scene in a black Chevrolet Tahoe. Colchester Police and Colchester Fire arrived on scene to help treat the 51-year-old female victim of Colchester, IL. The female victim was transported to an area hospital for her injuries. McDonough County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to look for Shirey.

At approximately 5:49 p.m. McDonough / Schuyler County 911 received a 911 call from a motorist on Illinois 336 at the U.S. Highway 136 bypass. The caller stated that someone had jumped off the bridge into oncoming traffic. Colchester Fire, Macomb Fire, Illinois State Police, and the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and located Shawn K. Shirey, who had jumped 28 feet from the U.S. 136 overpass onto Illinois 336. Shirey sustained multiple injuries and was treated by Lifeguard Ambulance and Air Evac 59. Shirey was then transported to an area hospital with major injuries by Air Evac 59.

The investigation at this point is ongoing. Charges against Shirey have been filed. The McDonough County States Attorney’s Office is assisting in the investigation along with the Detectives from the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office. The McDonough County Sheriff will have an updated press release in days to come.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
