Our hearts are saddened with the sudden passing of Karen Jehling, 79, of Galesburg, Illinois. She entered the gates of Heaven on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the Dignity Health Arizona General Hospital in Mesa, Arizona.
She was born on February 6, 1942, in Ottumwa, Iowa, as the beloved daughter of I. Wayne and Helen (Oliver) Smith. Along the way, she married the love of her life, Paul Jehling, on September 15, 1963, in Galesburg, and together they created a beautiful life and family. Paul preceded her in death on September 22, 2015, and also her son Jeffrey Jehling of Galesburg, October 3, 2017.
She is survived by her son, Bryan (Amy) Jehling, of Tempe, Arizona and three wonderful grandchildren, Vanessa, Maureen, and Tyler, her two sisters Pam Whittom of Chatham, and Cheryl (Dan) Siems of Galesburg along with many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her daughter in law, Elaine Jehling of Galesburg.
Karen graduated in 1960 from Galesburg High School and Browns Business College in 1962. She worked in the Finance Department of the City of Galesburg and then in the Knox County Circuit Clerks office, retiring in 2004.
During her free time, Karen loved reading, counted cross-stitching, and doing crossword puzzles. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly, especially visiting family in Arizona. She lived a fulfilling life of faith, as she was an active member of the First Christian Church and was a part of the Caring Ministries, and Lydia Circle Ministries. Her smile could light up the whole world and you always felt a warm welcoming presence when she walked in the room. Her legacy will always live on in the unforgettable memories she gave to others. She will be greatly missed by many.
Visitation will be 9:30-11:00 am Monday, December 6, 2021, at the First Christian Church with services to follow at 11:00 am with her brother-in-law, Rev. Daniel Siems officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Karen’s memory may be made to First Christian Church.
