Western Illinois University has been recognized once again by the U.S.News & World Report for offering some of the best online degree programs. Western is ranked 111th out of 384 regionally accredited institutions in the 2022 “Best Online Programs: Bachelor’s” category. Western also received a “Best for Vets” designation, ranking 63rd.

WIU offers 463 online classes (320 undergraduate; 143 graduate) and 16 undergraduate and 10 graduate degree programs online, including the longstanding Bachelor of General Studies (BGS), which offers students the option of obtaining their degree entirely via distance learning opportunities, or through a combination of on-campus and distance learning classes.

“Online learning has had a presence at WIU for many years. Of course, the pandemic pushed us, along with others, into an online learning environment for some months. Because of our longstanding history with providing online options, we were able to continue to provide a stellar education to our students, and we continue to do so to meet the needs of our students around the globe,” said WIU President Guiyou Huang. “We will continue to provide educational opportunities through a variety of platforms to ensure that everyone has access to the quality academic experience that WIU provides.”

WIU’s online bachelor’s degree programs include accountancy, anthropology, communication, economics (BA), economics (BB), fire protection services, general studies, geographic information services, human resource management, law enforcement and justice administration, management, marketing, nursing (RN-BSN completion), political science, sociology and supply chain management.

The undergraduate anthropology program at WIU went online in Fall 2017, and is the first of its kind in the state, and one of only a few in the nation, to offer the major online.

Online graduate degrees are accountancy, curriculum and instruction, educational studies, instructional design and technology, music education, public safety administration, reading, special education, teaching mathematics, and MBA, which is also included in the 2022 U.S.News and World Report Best Online MBA Programs.
