Judith L. Schmidt, 83, of Altona, Illinois, passed away at 8:27 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2022 at Seminary Manor in Galesburg.

She was born August 11, 1938 in Victoria, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer and Louise (Rowe) Smith. Judy was reared in educated in Illinois. She received her GED and then went on to receive her nursing assistant certification. Judy worked for a number of years as a CNA at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Geneseo, Illinois. She later took on the role of being a caretaker for her grandchildren. Judy married Johnny Schmidt on June 16, 1954 at the Chapel of the Friendly Trees, west of Kewanee, Illinois.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 68 years, John Schmidt of Altona; three sons: Randy Schmidt of Ankeny, Iowa, Mike (Laurie) Schmidt and Shane (Kristy) Schmidt, both of Galva, Illinois. Judy is also survived by six grandchildren: Chad Schmidt, Jackie Hill, Jeremy Payne, Dustin Carlson, Samantha Schmidt, and Douglas Schmidt; six great-grandchildren: Evie Hill, Isabel Hill, Allisa Hill, Brylee Schmidt, Dexter Schmidt, and Maislynn Schmidt; two step-grandchildren: Chase and Rosie Howell; three step-great-grandchildren: Christopher, Brandon, and Elli Payne; and one sister, Donna Boardman of Kewanee. Preceding her in death were her parents; her step-dad, Don Stutler; her beloved daughter, Laura Payne; a daughter-in-law, Emily; one brother, Stuart Smith; one step-brother, Dwaine Stutler; and three step-sisters: Elaine Millman, Vera Skutnick, and Lila Trickle.

Judy enjoyed gardening, camping, square-dancing, bowling, and going to the casino. She was a great cook and enjoyed making delicious meals for her family. Judy loved caring for and spending time with her grandchildren. Her greatest enjoyment was being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Cremation will be accorded and there are no services planned. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the family. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
