New information from the U.S. Department of Education shows half the nation’s students began this school year a full year behind grade level in at least one subject because of pandemic disruptions. According to recent data, students in the U.S. fell further behind than those in other countries. Research published in the journal Nature Human Behavior showed students in 15 countries fell behind only about a third of a year on average. Fifty-nine-percent of U.S. public school principals surveyed said their schools are using some form of so-called “tailored accelerated instruction” to help kids catch up, particularly in reading and math.
