James Clayton Walker, 76, of Galesburg, died at 7:18 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at OSF Richard Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
He was born September 27, 1946 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Everett W. and Prosha M. (Hocker) Walker. After graduating from ROVA High School in 1964, James enlisted in the US Navy in May of 1965 and was honorably discharged in May of 1969. He then worked as the head engineer in maintenance at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for 33 years, until his retirement in 2010.
Jim was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon, as well as a member and past commander of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 in Galesburg, American Legion Post #727 in Oneida, and American Legion Post #726 in Victoria. He was also a past commander of the American Legion 15th District and a member of the Religious Emphasis Committee for the State of Illinois. Jim enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, and raising rabbits.
Left to cherish his memory are four sons: Chad (Shelly) Walker of Spring Hill, Florida, Ian Walker of Galesburg, Jonathan Walker of Galesburg, and Alex Walker of Galesburg; two daughters, Sarah (James) Wolf of Galesburg, and Rebekah Walker of Laredo, Texas. Also surviving are five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Walker; and one sister, Deborah Beetler.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg. Private burial of cremated remains will be at Victoria Cemetery in Victoria, Illinois. Memorial contributions may be made to the family for a fund to be designated at a later date.
